Establishing Your Late- Fee Policy...

Most parents, despite their best intentions, will be late picking their child up from time to time. This could be because traffic, their meeting ran over, etc. Then there are those parents, who for lack of saying, just don't care. They will constantly be late picking up their child/ren.

The best way to not being abused is by establishing a solid late fee policy. Here are a couple different ways you could approach this issue.

You could write up a disclaimer for the parents to sign that clearly state your policy. Here is an example:

                                  Late-Fee Policy

My hours of operation are as follows, from 6:00 A.M to 6:00 P.M. I DO NOT encourage late pickups, but I do give parents a fifteen minute grace period. If a parent or any other designated individual arrives after 6:15 P.M., a late fee of $5.00 is charged for each fifteen minute increments thereafter. If the parent or individual knows he/she will be late and they make prior arrangements with me, a $3.00 fee per fifteen minutes is assessed.

Provider Signature:_________________________

Some providers give the parents three late pickups for free, then after they begin charging. If you do this, you still need to write up a disclaimer as above, but just add that you initially give them three late pickups free, thereafter they will be charged such and such (as above).

Whatever method you choose, be sure you stick to it. Don't be afraid to be strict. You've got to be. If you do not follow through with your late policy, parents WILL abuse you and your policy.
